چکیده

Analyses are made of the evolution of selected polarimetric radar data fields during periods immediately preceding the onset of near-surface hail indicators [high reflectivity and low differential reflectivity (Zdr)] in two nonsupercellular northeastern Colorado hailstorms. The primary data were obtained from the 11-cm-wavelength, dual-polarization Colorado State University (CSU)–University of Chicago and Illinois State Water Survey radar. In one of the storms, dual-Doppler wind field syntheses were available using additional velocity data collected by the CSU Pawnee S-band radar. In both events, linear depolarization ratio (LDR) values exceeding 225 dB began to appear in the right flank of the 50-dBZ echo core region, within the 08 to 2208C environmental temperature range, approximately 10 minutes prior to the onset of hail at the surface. Scattering calculations suggest that the LDR enhancement may have been caused by an increasing water fraction within the growing hailstones (spongy hail), or the development of a liquid water coat under wet growth conditions. Vertical structure of the Zdr fields was also examined. As hypothesized by Conway and Zrnić, it was found that the distinctness of the positive Zdr column associated with supercooled raindrops and incompletely frozen particles above the 08C height varies from storm to storm.

A Comparison between Polarimetric Radar and Wind Profiler Observations of Precipitation in Tropical Showers

This paper describes the results of an experiment that combines the data from a 5-cm-wavelength polarimetric radar and multiple-frequency wind profilers to examine the polarimetric signatures associated with the microphysical structure of several relatively shallow thunderstorms and also to examine quantitative rainfall measurements made with the polarimetric radar. These shallow storms produce...

Assimilation of Simulated Polarimetric Radar Data for a Convective Storm Using Ensemble Kalman Filter. Part I: Observation Operators for Reflectivity and Polarimetric Variables

i Abstract A radar simulator for polarimetric radar variables including reflectivities at horizontal and vertical polarizations, the differential reflectivity and the specific differential phase, has been developed. This simulator serves as a testbed for developing and testing forward observation operators of polarimetric radar variables that are needed when directly assimilating these variable...

Hail Detection with Polarimetric Radar

Dual-polarization radars typically transmit horizontally and vertically polarized waves and receive polarized backscattered signals. Because illuminated hydrometeors are not spherical, their radar backscatter cross sections are not the same for the two polarizations. Hydrometeor size, shape, orientation, and thermodynamic phase can be inferred from returned signals. Polarimetric hail algorithms...

Evaluation of Microphysical Retrievals from Polarimetric Radar with Wind Profiler Data

Polarimetric radar data have been used to produce microphysical classifications. This kind of analysis is run in a real-time mode from several research radars, including the C-band polarimetric (C-Pol) radar in Darwin, Australia. However, these classifications have had very little systematic evaluation with independent data. Using surface data is often difficult because of sampling issues, part...
